How does your morning routine set the tone for your day as a business owner?
A morning routine helps me focus on the most important things to accomplish that day, moving me toward my business goals. However, I tend to drift into being less productive and more distracted when I don't follow my routine. It’s easy to follow the next “shiny object” that pops into my inbox, which wastes my energy and time.
Are there any specific habits or rituals you prioritize every morning to maintain a healthy work-life balance?
Yes, absolutely. I use a roller on my back and legs, do yoga for 15-20 minutes, or use weights. I block time in my calendar for yoga, barre, spin, or stretch classes. Sometimes, I must let go of the morning exercise routine due to early morning meetings, knowing that I will return to my exercise routine the next day if possible. I meditate whenever I can, even for just a few minutes.
What role do planning and organization play in your morning routine?
I keep a productivity journal to plan my week with the most important items to accomplish, and then I block time on my calendar. Each day, I write something in my life I am grateful for, set an intention, and write the five most important tasks with estimates on how much time I need for each one. This sounds like I’m so together, but there are days and weeks when I can’t do it because of life’s curve balls. When I fall off my morning routine, I return as soon as possible.
Do you prepare the night before or rely on spontaneous morning preparation?
It depends. If I have an early morning meeting, I will prepare the night before. I will be more spontaneous if I have more time before starting my day. When my daughter was young, as a single mom, I would plan her and my wardrobe and all our meals on Sundays for the entire week. I give myself lots more flexibility now that I am only responsible for myself being ready in the morning.
What is your ONE non-negotiable habit or system in your morning routine?
Stretching. It helps me to feel better for the rest of the day. And coffee is a must in the morning.
What advice would you give to other women entrepreneurs about developing an effective morning routine supporting their business and personal growth?
Be kind to yourself. As women business owners, we often set high expectations for what we should and shouldn’t be doing. As they say, don’t “should” on yourself. We are human and will have days when our mornings are chaotic or we fall off our routines. Give yourself some grace and appreciate how incredible you are!
